PERFECT TENSES
Who does not want perfection in his or her life? Everybody does. We all do. Puspita Chandra wants a perfectly beautiful life. So does Gargi Bandopaddhyay. Puspita wants to teach in a University or college after completing her PhD in Physics. She has made her choice. She wants to marry the man of her choice and have kids. She is dreaming about about a 'perfect' life. But our experience shows that life is anything but perfect. We have to live with fragments of many broken dreams as Gargi will probably testify. I can tell you from my own experience that life was, is or will never be perfect. This is the EMPERICAL TRUTH we have to live with.
But we have been talking about perfect tenses. Not about Perfect Life. That is the problem with me. I deviate , every now and then, from the main issue. Let me come to the point. What exactly do we mean by PERFECT TENSES? Let me try to explain. I have completed a task that was assigned to me. I HAVE READ A BOOK./ I HAD WRITTEN A POEM YESTERDAY/ PUSPITA WILL HAVE COMPLETED HER THESIS BY THE END OF 2018. All these are examples of perfect tenses. The operating word in all these instances is ''completion'' of the task or work. There is nothing tentative or uncertain about the 'action' in a manner of speaking. As usual there are three perfect tenses in the English Language.
1. Present Perfect Tense is used when a given task has been completed. There is nothing uncertain about it.
Example: Puspita has read a new book on Physics. ( We have to remember two things here a) we have to use either has or have depending on the subject of the verb and b) we must use the past participle form/3rd form of the conjugated verb. These are the rules and we have to abide by them.)
2. Past Perfect Tense is somewhat peculiar. We generally use this form of tense in conjunction with the simple past tense. This is because we want to say that in the past two actions were completed or two incidents happened almost at the same time in the past.( To be continued.......)
