INDEFINITE TENSES

                                   INDEFINITE TENSES

There are three indefinite tenses--a) Present b) Past & c) Future
They are also called simple tenses. It indicates that the time is not exactly specific when an action took place, takes place or will take place.

1.Ranjit Guha writes poems. ( Of course it is great news but when does he writes them? Here we are just informing the readers that Ranjit does do something worthwhile. It is a habit. Does he write at dawn, at noon or in the evening of a day? We don't know. So the time is indefinite )

Rules: We use the original form of the verb in this tense. There is one exception--------if the subject is in the 3rd person singular number, we add an's' or 'es' withe the verb. It is called inflection. In all other cases we use the original form of the verb. ( minus the 'to', of course )

2.Apratim gave me a very rare book. ( Ok, very good. Really very good of him to give you a rare book. Please lend it to  me after you have finished reading it. All we know is that he gave the book to you sometime earlier. Exactly when we don't know. Even if we knew the exact time the action of giving was completed. The indication is that the'action of giving' happened in the past. So we have used the past form of the verb Give here.)

Rules: The rules are very simple. Just use .the past form of the concerned verb in all the cases to indicate past indefinite tense.Only in the case of 'be' verb we have use 'were' if the subject is YOU or in the plural form.

3. Sukanya will sing a Rabindrasangit in the evening.( Again we are delighted to hear that for she sings relly very well. She possesses a melodious voice. We know that she is not singing now. We also know that her action of singing was not completed earlier, It is yet to happen. The time has not yet come. It is in the future. So it is future indefinite tense.)

Rules : Rules are very simple. Use shall or will before the main verb. Don't change the form of the main verb. You can use 'will' wherever you like but be a little careful with your 'shall'. Dont use it in the 3rd person singular number unless you are an advocate or you are a devout christian. Legal and Biblical English is not for us common people.

Now as many sentences as you can using these three indefinite tenses. You will like it. Since morning to midnight you need to use at least 50 different types of verbs. So you will get 50x3= 150 sentences. If you write their negative forms you will get another 150 sentences. If you can form the interrogative sentences withe same verbs you will get 300 more sentences. That means you will get a total of 600 sentences with 50 verbs. When you learn to write in the passive voice just imagine how many sentences you can write with 50 verbs! So write down the 50 verbs of your choice and start writing interesting yet simple sentences. It is really fun learning, isn't it?

                                               I TOLD YOU, DIDN'T I?
