ARTICLES......( continuation )

                                          Articles ( continuation )

3. We use the article AN when a word begins with a vowel sound and indicates one unit of anything.
An island, An orange, An ink-pot, An ant, An M.A., An M.Sc, An honest man.etc. When you pronounce these words correctly you will get to hear a single VOWEL sound. So we shall use An to mean one unit of something. An M.A.because the pronunciation of 'M' begins with a VOWEL sound =e (M=E+M).

4. The definite article THE is used before both singular or plural nouns if it is used in a special sense. As for examples = I know the girl wearing the white top. ( Here we mean to say that the girl in question is already known to me.).
a) The other uses of the is known to you,I hope. We use the before the names of rivers, lakes, group of islands, mountains and deserts.
b) We use the before the names of Epics = The Mahabharata, The  Ramayana etc
c) We use  the before the names of famous monuments, buildings, palaces and historical places or sites.
d) We use the before the names of deserts
e) We use the to indicate a race or nationality or/and group words.
f) Sometimes we use the for the purpose of identification or/ and putting emphasis on some persons, place, events etc.

You will find that we use the more frequently than we use A orAN.

Looking forward to your comments and valuable suggestions.
