People all over the world celebrated '' Friendship Day'' yesterday. I received a number of messages from my young friends. I could not decide how to respond to them. To me every day is a friendship day. Do we observe '' Enmity" day? But the important question is : who is a friend? We use this term in a generic sense. All who study with me or who work with me in the same institution are my friends. They are acquaintances. Are all of them friends? As we grow into life we come to realize that any TOM, DICK or HARRY was not my friend. A real and true friend is a rare species, hard to find. If you get one true friend in your life consider yourself blessed. In Sanskrit language there is a good definition of friend. The loose translation of that sloka is : He who stands by you in all seasons, who shares your joys and sorows, your poverty and riches , is your true friend. In English they have given a very simple definition; A friend in need is a friend indeed. Kahlil Gibran has given a new definition. He has said that a person with whom I love to spend some time and both of us enjoy each other's company and desire to meet again-that person is a TRUE friend. I couldn't agree more with him. I accept Gibran's interpretation. Even a stranger may help you in the time of need or danger. Does he automatically become our friend? There are many Good Samaritans around us. They are good people but they may not be our friends.
I consider Ranjit Guha as one of my true friends. He has not stood by me in time of my need. Neither did I do anything for him. But we savour each other's company. There is a feeling of warmth in our relationship. He never hesitates to point out my mistakes. He cuts me to size whenever an opportunity arises. I do not spare him if I find anything to criticize. But we know that we are 100% honest with each other and there is no malice in our criticism.
