( My friend from Durgapur has asked me a very pertinent question. How a student who studies in a Bengali medium school can learn English in a proper way. My honest answer is I DON'T KNOW. it is of course an unsatisfactory answer. We must find out an effective method. I am still searching for the correct and effective method. I will try to explain it within a few days. Meanwhile here is an interesting story for the students.)

A teenage boy was celebrating his 14th Birthday with her parents and close friends. His mother had cooked some delicious and mouth-watering dishes for him and his friend. They were making a lot of noise and fun. They were having a blast of time. The music was on and they were singing and dancing in gay abandon. The boy was very happy . He was an apple of his parent's eyes. His friends had brought him attractive gifts . Yet the boy was a little sad at heart because one of his favourite uncles could not come because of his preoccupation. He had sent him some money and asked him a gift of his choice with that. On the next day the boy was going to the market to buy his gift. When he had reached at the entrance of the market his roving eyes fell on an old woman lying on the opposite footpath. Nobody paid any attention to the helpless woman. The boy crossed the road and went to the spot where the woman was lying. He sat down beside her and saw that she was still breathing. He asked her in a soft and kind voice what she was doing there. The old woman told him in a very feeble voice that she had not eaten for two days and she had none to look after her. hearing the sad story tears well up inside the boy's heart. He helped the woman sit up and gave all the money he had with him to that old and helpless woman. She reminded him of his own grandmother. The woman blessed him profusely. He returned home empty handed. He felt a strange kind of joy in his herar. The joy of giving. His parents hugged him warmly when they heard his story and said,'' We are so proud of you.'' It was the best gift that the boy could give himself.

I will recommend the following steps for the beginners to take if you want to learn English through Self Teaching Method. (STM). If your parents can help you or if you have a teacher to help you, you do not need my help. They will guide you. And they know you better than me. I do believe that each individual learner has different problem and each of them needs separate set of instructions and guidance. My suggestions are for those who have no one around to guide them. Here are some of my suggestions:
1. Think positive. A positive frame of mind is very necessary. Say to yourself : I can and I will learn English because in the present world it is a MUST.
2. Give yourself a good dictionary and a good bi-lingual grammar. Initially it will help you.
3. Grab a good Bengali Grammar Book. The structural part of the Bengali and English language are more or less SAME barring some exception. Your knowledge in Bengali Grammar will help you immensely.
4. Make your own WORD BOOK. Each day add a few words in your WB and learn their spellings and meanings. The best way to remember the spellings is to write the new .words again and again in your scrap book. Don't try to memorize them . They will cloud and crowd your memory. Letters and words are pictures. The best way to remember them is to write them.
5. Learn your parts of speech. Try to write the word family of each noun, verb and adverb.
6. Remember to use the articles properly. A good grammar book will help you.
7. Know your tenses properly and make sentences with each word in all the form of tenses.
8. Write the sentences in the negative as well as in the interrogative forms of sentences.
9. Read allowed each sentence at least 5 times at one go. I can assure you if you follow my humble suggestions it will help you greatly.
10. Read story books, newspapers and listen to English News and sports commentary in English.
We shall have further discussion on this topic after a few days. Happy Learning.
